The event promotes the preservation and sustainable use of raphia, a vital component of local culture, economy and ecosystems.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>\ud83c\udf34 Celebrating raphia in the heart of Baleng<\/h2>\n<p>The Fo Negou II Raphia Week has been running since Tuesday and concludes this Friday at the <strong>Baleng Paramount Chiefdom<\/strong>, in <strong>Bafoussam II<\/strong>, Mifi Division, West Region.<\/p>\n<p>The cultural gathering is held under the <strong>high patronage of the President of the West Regional Council, Dr Jules Hilaire Focka Focka<\/strong>, with overall supervision by <strong>Paramount Chief Fo Negou II<\/strong>, and coordination by the <strong>Curator of the Royal Museum, Hilaire Tassa Nofewe<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>\ud83c\udf3f Preserving gallery forests and non-timber forest products<\/h2>\n<p>This fourth edition focuses on the theme:<br \/>\n<strong>\u201cGallery forests of the West Region, ecosystem strengthening and the promotion of raphia and non-timber forest products.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Raphia is showcased as a <strong>key element of cultural identity, local livelihoods and environmental balance<\/strong>. Conferences, exhibitions, competitions, cultural performances and master classes attract tourists, students and the general public.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>\ud83d\udc51 Passing down ancestral knowledge<\/h2>\n<p>At the call of <strong>King Fo Negou II<\/strong>, mature raphia bamboo stems were delivered by members of the traditional <strong>\u201cNda Mekam\u201d<\/strong> group. The bamboo fence surrounding the Royal Palace is currently being renewed through traditional weaving and tying techniques.<\/p>\n<p>Young participants are being introduced to ancestral skills by cultural custodians, ensuring intergenerational transmission.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>\ud83c\udf76 Raphia wine and craftsmanship in focus<\/h2>\n<p>Participants also enjoy samples of <strong>white raphia wine<\/strong>, locally known as <strong>\u201cMel\u00f9\u2019 Nkha\u201d<\/strong>, a traditional beverage facing gradual decline. A <strong>best raphia wine competition<\/strong> was held at the Royal Museum\u2019s conference hall, where Baleng wine producers presented their products to a jury.<\/p>\n<p>A master class led by artisan and basket weaver <strong>Chinonsso, known as Taku\u0113 Kamdem<\/strong>, showcased artistic creations made from raphia components, including seeds and fibers.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>\ud83c\udf31 Sustainability at the core of discussions<\/h2>\n<p>Industry stakeholders emphasised the need for <strong>nursery development<\/strong> as a key strategy for sustaining raphia resources.
